The purpose of this one week brief was to create a folded leaflet of our personal understanding of our design process. For the first couple of days I struggled with ideas and getting in to the swing being back in the studio. Especially after a few months of summer relaxing, it almost felt stressful. I attempted to design a folded leaflet that is considered and effective. Everything has been carefully arranged even though it is to look casual. I have designed and used vector illustrations to go on my leaflet which helps communicate my design process effectively.
I have tried to keep my design process simple and easy to read. I have taken on board feedback/points I have received from crits which has really helped produce my overall outcome. Considering this was only a one-week brief as well as our first week back, I am happy with what I have created within the time.
I am fond of the square fold out I have created, I think it is unique and reflects me. I feel the fold is representative of my design process, as a concertina fold suggests a very linear structured process which is not what I do. I struggle with a structured, rigid process as it makes me feel trapped, overwhelmed and most of all uninspired. I’m a free spirit which guide my ideas and concepts, I like going back and forth between ideas and re-visiting work. This process is represented as circle within a square. From my summer brief on sacred geometry, a circle within a square represents unity as well as the expression "squaring the circle" which is sometimes used as a metaphor for trying to do the impossible. This perhaps emphasises the fast-paced, stress of deadlines and the intensive course. As last year has flown by in a rapid stress inducing timeline.
I’m sure my this year will fly by too, thus it is imperative to hit the ground running and work hard throughout. I feel my time management and commitment have developed, as well as my ability to quickly work up designs within a studio environment. I think this is because I am much more confident with the adobe software, and I don't worry about what anyone thinks. This first semester of study I want to develop my idea generation processes, creating insightful, and established responses/concepts to design challenges.
If I were to have more time on this brief, I would perhaps re-visit my vector illustrations, I feel they are a bit too clean and crisp, and haven't got a lot of my personality in them. Also, I would like to have looked at creating a sticker or something to hold the leaflet down. Overall, I am pleased with what I have created over the week.
