Web Terminology/Trends



HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language
The standard language used in the creation of web pages.

HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
The basis for the transfer of data across the World Wide Web.

URL- Uniform Resource Locator
Also known as a web address and used to reference web pages.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheet
A stylesheet marup language used for formatting

The decline of Skeuomorphism
A skeuomorph /ˈskjuːəmɔrf/ is a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original. Examples include pottery embellished with imitation rivets reminiscent of similar pots made of metal and a software calendar that 
imitates the appearance of binding on a paper desk calendar.

The rise of flat design
Simplified block colour e.g windows phones.

Single page website
A continuous scroll down, all the information on one page instead of separate links.


Responsive design

Responsive design’ could be called ‘reactive design’.It is‘responsive’ because the design 
‘responds’, i.e. can be adapted to a variety of media using screens of various sizes.The concept was introduced by Ethan Marcotte, a webdesigner and developer, who became famous after publishing his book, Responsive Web Design, in which he discussed the constraints and difficulties involved in developing responsive web sites.

Type based websites
A website which is predominately type.
